There were a huge number of trekkers who wanted me to put the famous Chadar trek this Jan but I wanted to do something off-beat. This Kedarkantha trek (a peak climb) caught my attention, its more scenic and more enjoyable trek I must say.
Here are the details, let me know if you want to join in.
Kedarkantha Winter Trek:
The trek is rated as an easy trek in summer, but winter conditions make it a challenging trek. The Kedarkantha trek is the ideal trek to experience winter in the Garhwal Himalaya. Join me for this memorable adventure from 23-27th Jan 2016. (Opportunity to be on top of a Himalayan Peak on 26th January, Republic Day of India.)
We will have to go past deep snow conditions and face extreme cold weather at night. Doing this trek in winter is not for the faint hearted!
About:
Kedarkantha is situated in the Govind National Park and very close to the Tons river. It is a great site for observing flora and fauna and is rich in bird-life.
Peak: On this trek, we will also attempt to summit the 3820 meter high Kedarkantha Peak.
The Team:
Only 6 members. Participants need to be fit to be able to walk and endure cold. The trek will also be accompanied by cooks and porters, though we will be expected to carry our own loads. Extra porters can be arranged.
Note: Good, waterproof trekking shoes and good quality warm wear are a must. They can be borrowed or rented at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, Delhi.
My Promise : Very highly trained and qualified guides, high safety standards, complete adherence to Leave No Trace ethics, full safety gear.
Duration: 6 days (ex-Dehradoon)
Level: Intermediate, with challenging winter conditions.
Dates: 23-27th Jan 2015
ITINERARY
Jan 23: Arrive Dehradoon, Drive Sankri: On arrival at dehradoon by bus or train, you will be met by our car (tata sumo), and we will drive to Sankri.
Jan 24: Trek Sankri to Juda ka Talab – The walk is a gentle uphill, but steep in places. Its is short, only 4 km, but may be difficult if we encounter snow. Juda Ka Talab is a beautiful meadow, and one of the nicest campsites!
Meals : all
Jan 25: Trek Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha base – After a climb to a ridge, we walk along the ridge, flanked by large oak trees. It is a beautiful walk, and you will see peaks such as Swargarohini, Kala nag and Bandarpoonch.
Jan 26: Trek Kedarkantha base to Kedarkantha Peak and descend to Hargaon – we will start early today and aim to climb the peak that we can see from the camp. The climb is steep, and may be made difficult by snow conditions. If snow conditions are too challenging, we may opt not to climb to the summit. We aim to return to our camp by noon. After a quick meal, we will descend to a lower camp at hargaon – again an extremely pretty campsite.
Jan 27: Trek Hargaon to Sankri – Today’s trek is all downhill, and extremely pretty with many swithcbacks along the route. Walk off the snow into dense green forests and apple orchards, until you reach the roadhad at Sankri. Rooms will be arranged for guests in Sankri, where will will spend the night.
If we are all meeting in Delhi, we can go together by train/bus. The tickets don’t cost much.
